Majority of election results released

Over the past week, the High National Election Commission (HNEC) has released district-by-district results from the vote for Libya’s General National Congress (GNC), which took place on 7 July.

Although the comprehensive, final results had still not been published as of 16 July, the preliminary figures point to a victory for the National Forces Alliance (NFA) in the 80 seats which have been allocated to political parties. The remaining 120 of the 200 seats in the new body are set aside for individual candidates.

The results so far suggest that the NFA, a broad coalition led by Mahmoud Jibril – who held several senior economic positions under the Gaddafi regime before playing a prominent role in the National Transitional Council (NTC) after February 2011 – won around half of the 80 seats. Its performance was better than many had expected.

Based on the information available, the Justice and Construction Party, which is associated with Libya’s Muslim Brotherhood, appears to have won the second largest number of votes.

Although individual candidates will make up the majority of the GNC, many are thought to be linked to political parties, meaning that the overall hue of the new parliament may not become clearer until a later stage.

The HNEC said that overall turnout was 62% of registered voters.
